Thanks to all who made it to Back to School Meet and Greet! To those unable to come, we look forward to seeing you on Monday, August 20 at 8:40 a.m. The first few days can be a bit crazy, so I thought I’d send some logistical information to help drop off and pick up run smoothly.
Student Drop off and pick up (Kiss and Go): Drop off for students is on the east side of Glenarm St. This is for loading and unloading only, so please stay in your vehicle and do not park there. There is not a “line” at the Kiss and Go. Instead, it works like airport pick up and drop off. Please exit the Kiss and Go area quickly in order to allow others to drop off or pick up. Please do not sit in the Kiss and Drop and check messages, etc…The Kiss and Go area can get quite crowded. Please be patient.
For the first few weeks of school, we will walk the first graders out early. They will always have a teacher with them and will wait upstairs on the porch for their rides. The teacher will not release first graders until they have made eye contact with the caregiver. If the only child at school is a first grader, we recommend that you come early and we can get your child to you before the other caregivers arrive. If you have older students, we strongly recommend that you come to pick them closer to 3:45 when the crowd has thinned. Staff remain outside to supervise students until 3:45 and then bring the remaining students into the office to wait safely with the office staff.
Students may not play on the playground and wait for parents. All parent pick up is on Glenarm.
Please do not double park in the Kiss and Go. If it is full, you will either need to circle the block or park and walk up.
Please do not make U-turns on Glenarm.
Parent Parking: Parents are welcome at any time, but please do not park in the Kiss and Go. Please park in the surrounding neighborhood or across the street on Glenarm or Tremont.
Bus Loading and Unloading: This takes the block on the west side of Tremont (by the playground). Please do not park there as you will block the buses.
Bus Riding: For the first few weeks we have extra staff helping students get on the right bus. You can help us by pinning a note to your child’s backpack with your address, phone number and the bus stop intersection or location. Thank you for your assistance.
Handicapped Parking: Handicapped Parking is on the west side of Tremont near 22nd just south of the bus loading area.
Breakfast: We serve breakfast daily at 8:30 daily free of charge to all students who want to eat. Students may not be at school prior to 8:30 unless they are enrolled in a morning enrichment class or in Discovery Link. We do not provide student supervision until 8:30.
Morning Routines: From 8:30-8:40 students may either eat breakfast or play on the playground. There are 3 adults on the playground and two adults outside the playground fence to supervise bus drop off. Two adults are posted on Glenarm in the Kiss and Go zone and one adult at the crosswalk at Glenarm and 22nd St. Students and parents should cross the street at the crosswalk. Since teachers are preparing their lessons and materials, students may only be outside on the playground or at breakfast between 8:30 and 8:40. Teachers pick up students on the playground at 8:40 to begin the day. Students arriving after 8:45 are considered tardy and must come directly to the office. Staff are only outside to supervise students until 8:40.
Afternoon Routines: For the safety of our students, every attempt should be made to have consistent afterschool plans. If you have an emergency change in your afternoon pick up plans, please do not contact the classroom teacher as they are busy teaching and may not get the message. Please contact the office and we will do everything we can to ensure that we get your child to the correct spot. Staff are outside to supervise students until 3:45. Please be aware that our staff are intensely focused on student safety during pick up time and are unable to converse about school matters or progress at that time.
Construction: You may have noticed quite a bit of construction around the school. The construction companies have done their best to work with us and keep us informed of their schedules. Next week they will be tearing down cranes. I have been promised that this will not take place during our drop off and pick up.
First Day of School: On the first day of school, all students will meet their teachers on the playground. After I welcome students, I will dismiss them to go inside with their classes, and students will say goodbye to parents to begin the day.
Communication With Teachers: All teachers have DPS email addresses and voicemails listed on our website. You are also welcome to call voicemail to leave a message. The front office can connect you to teacher voicemails if you do not have the number. All messages left on business will be answered within 24 hours of receipt. Please be aware that teachers are not checking email or voicemail when they are with students, so if you have time sensitive information, please contact the front office.
I hope this information will help you and your student(s) get off to a great start! If you have questions or additional needs, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
