I was born in Rapid City, South Dakota, but have been in Denver since elementary school. I’m a proud DPS graduate! After I attended CSU and Metro State for undergrad and teaching licensure, I later went back to school for a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Integrated Arts from Lesley University. I started teaching for DPS in 1997 and have taught 2nd, 3rd, 4th, GT, Special Education, and Art. When I’m not in school I’m spending time with my two children (both Polaris “alums”) and husband, knitting, trying new restaurants, or visiting with my friends. I feel extremely lucky to be teaching at Polaris!

Mrs. Kielmeyer is excited to make music at Polaris Elementary. She teaches 1st through 5th grade general music which includes once per week lessons for all students. In addition to the general music curriculum she teaches concert band, modern band, world drumming and choir enrichments and electives.
When Mrs. Kielmeyer is not at school, she enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, biking, gardening and playing games. She plays flute and piccolo in the Lone Tree Symphony and directs the children’s handbell choir at her church.

Katie Ray, Technology
Hi! My name is Katie Ray. I am the Technology Teacher at Polaris Elementary. I was born and raised in Englewood, Colorado. I married my high school sweetheart after graduating from Colorado State with an undergraduate degree in Human Development and Family Studies. I wanted to teach and needed a teaching certificate, so I attended the University of Colorado at Denver for a masters in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus of Instructional Technology.
Upon graduating, I started teaching 3rd grade in Douglas County for 2 years and then moved closer to home and started teaching in Denver. I was a classroom teacher for 5 years before moving into the library. I loved being a librarian! When I had my son, I decided that I wanted to work part time and found a Technology teaching position that was great! I am so fortunate to be able to do the two things that I love, Teaching and spending time with my children!
When I am not teaching I really enjoy reading, crafting, supporting my children (Avery 8 and Alden 11) with their activities, and spending time at our cabin.

Gail Axt, Librarian
As many of you know, I’ve been the librarian at Polaris for a long time, although my life is a “short” story.
I grew up in the New York City area and graduated from Boston University. I came to Colorado for a Master’s Degree in Library Science at the University of Denver and to follow my passion for skiing. I later became a ski instructor at Keystone on the weekends.
I have taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in Jefferson County, Cherry Creek, and Denver. I love being at Polaris where our teachers have created a “culture of reading” and our students are always excited about the newest library titles.
I am passionate about books and learning and have shared that with my two grown sons, one of whom lives in London and the other in Montreal. I am especially proud that both are avid readers!
When my nose is not buried in a book, my favorite activities are swimming and now hoverboarding. My husband worries that I’ll get hurt riding my hoverboard, but I keep telling him
that I don’t have far to fall.

Team Lead, Gifted Resource Teacher
I’m a Denver native and have been a staff member at Polaris for many years. I taught at Steele Elementary and other schools in the Denver area for 10 years before that. After working in the business world for 10 years, I earned my teaching license through the Stanley British Primary School’s teacher preparation program, which promotes a strong constructivist philosophy. With both my bachelor’s and a master’s degree (educational psychology) from CU Denver, I believe that gifted children need special care. Working with this population is an honor and a daily reminder of what’s important in life. I spend my free time reading a mixture of classics and light novels, puttering in my garden, remodeling my cabin in Conifer, and doing yoga.
