New Traffic Patterns on Tremont!
After 5 years of advocacy work, we are excited to announce some safety improvements happening near the school. A huge thank you to Councilman Watson, DOTI project manager Maggie Thompson, SRO Officer Zerate, and the DPD team in coordinating this effort.
A traffic diverter will be placed on Tremont at 22nd St. This means that cars will NOT be able to proceed toward downtown past Benedict Fountain park. DPD officers will be onsite to help direct vehicles on 22nd St during the first few weeks of school, and signs will be placed on Park Ave to reduce the number of "cut-through" drivers on Tremont. This reduction in vehicles will help keep speeds slower and our kids safer. It will take a little while for Google Maps to catch up.
Car lines will resume as kiss and go zones like last year, with 3rd-5th graders and carpools vehicles lining up on Glenarm and 1st and 2nd graders lining up on 22nd St. Please remember to enter from the 21st and Glenarm or 22nd and Court to help with the flow of vehicles. If you'd rather walk your child to the blue gates, please park North of Park Ave and cross at the light. The only vehicles allowed to drop off students on Tremont are buses.
Glenarm and Tremont have been reworked as neighborhood bikeways. There is now a 4-way stop at 24th and Tremont and a pedestrian refuge at Park Ave to make pedestrian crossings safer. Car traffic should be slower with the addition of several speed humps on both Glenarm and Tremont. Those improvements, combined with the additional bike racks, will hopefully help your family feel safer and consider alternate transportation such as walking or biking. Email lesliefjames@gmail.com (mom of a 3rd and 5th grader) if you'd like to start a new route or get connected into an existing group.
