While no two gifted students are alike, one thing is for certain, the adults in their lives are often interested in education, networking, and other supports. Below you will find information and links to information or organizations regarding giftedness, raising and educating a gifted child, and opportunities for you to be involved in aspects of gifted education.

What is Giftedness? Gifted and talented children in DPS are students whose demonstrated abilities, talents and/or potential for accomplishment are so exceptional or developmentally advanced that they require special provisions to meet their educational needs. These students perform, or show the potential of performing, at remarkably high levels in general intellectual ability, specific academic aptitude or specific talent aptitude when compared with others of their age and experience. Gifted and talented children are present in all student groups, regardless of gender, disability, English language proficiency, economic status, ethnic or cultural background.

Colorado Department of Education Definition of Giftedness: Gifted children means those persons between the ages of four and twenty-one whose aptitude or competence in abilities, talents, and potential for accomplishment in one or more domains are so exceptional or developmentally advanced that they require special provisions to meet their educational programming needs. Gifted and talented children are hereafter referred to as gifted students. Children under five who are gifted may also be provided with early childhood special educational services. Gifted students include gifted students with disabilities (i.e., twiceexceptional) and students with exceptional abilities or potential from all socio-economic, ethnic, cultural populations. Gifted students are capable of high performance, exceptional production, or exceptional learning behavior by virtue of any or a combination of these areas of giftedness: General or specific intellectual ability Specific academic aptitude Creative or productive thinking Leadership abilities Visual arts, performing arts, musical or psychomotor abilities.

It is CAGT’s belief that all humans have an inherent right to develop their full potential. The Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented fosters an understanding of all gifted children and their exceptional needs, and advocates for appropriate education and affective support through partnerships with educators, families, students, administrators, legislators, and the general public.CAGT is a nonprofit advocacy organization with a 40 year history of providing information, leadership and support to gifted young people, their families and educators of gifted young people in Colorado. By way of affiliate members across the state, CAGT endeavors to keep policy makers and all school districts aware of the issues surrounding gifted education.

NAGC’s mission is to support those who enhance the growth and development of gifted and talented children through education, advocacy, community building, and research. We aim to help parents and families, K-12 education professionals including support service personnel, and members of the research and higher education community who work to help gifted and talented children as they strive to achieve their personal best and contribute to their communities.
